Ukraine Became 3rd Nation Outside EU to Participate In the European Blockchain Partnership

By Natalie Wu | June 22, 2022

Ukraine reportedly became a member of the European Blockchain Partnership (EBP) – a project put together by 27 member states to provide cross-border public offerings.

Specifically, the development reportedly marked Ukraine as the third nation that is not a part of the European Union participating in the organization, following Norway and Liechtenstein.

The Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine reportedly disclosed details of the nation’s plan to participate in the EBP as an observer on June 16th, working towards the ultimate target of finalizing integration of its digital economic sphere with the EU.

Ukraine has plans down its pipeline to widen the scope of its interstate blockchain network alliance with other nations.

Ukraine’s intent to become a part of the EBP can be traced back to July last year, when Oleksii Zhmerenetskyi, head of parliamentary group Blockchain4Ukraine, and Konstantin Yarmolenko, founder and CEO of Virtual Assets of Ukraine, issued a letter to Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission.

The letter reportedly revealed Ukraine’s interest for a EBP and the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI) membership. Von der Leyen later confirmed the prospect of Ukraine’s accession to the EBP as an observer.

Yarmolenko also shared that Ukraine has an interest in carrying out test-node of the EBSI and trial phases for use cases of the blockchain-based cross-border public solutions. He emphasized that the cryptocurrency donations during the Russia-Ukraine war “proved as important support”.

“Next step is full blockchain integration of Ukraine and EU based on EBP/EBSI initiatives.”

Following previous collaborations with the EBP regarding blockchain pilot use cases as an observer, Ukraine plans to obtain full membership.

Yarmolenko further disclosed that Ukraine is plotting for more blockchain collaborations, to release cross-border public offerings to its citizens, including verification of educational credentials/diplomas and identity credentials and refugee/asylum registration and support.
