Reddit Revealed New Blockchain-supported ‘Collectible Avatars’

Reddit reportedly revealed details related to a new blockchain-powered avatar solution on July 7th, taking advantage of the Polygon blockchain for decentralized trading and third-party sales.

Specifically, although a particular release date is yet to be announced officially, the firm reportedly hinted that the avatars will be rolled out to the general public in the next few weeks. 

At the moment, Reddit is reportedly offering first-look early access to a selected few individuals who took part in the r/CollectibleAvatars community.

Collectible Avatars reportedly function as a set of limited-edition artwork designed by independent artists who are also users of the Reddit website. The new avatars are available to buy with local currencies. 

Nonetheless, the announcement also claimed that the artwork is kept on the Polygon blockchain. Moreover, management of the Collectible Avatars will be taiken care of via Vault, Reddit’s blockchain-based wallet that operates on Ethereum-compatible chains.

This most recent development by Reddit reportedly works towards the goal of empowering artists that use the website, as revealed in an announcement on on July 8th on their website. 

“From the start, our goal has been to empower artists to create and sell their work. Artists will get paid for every Collectible Avatar that sells on Reddit, less any fees, and are also entitled to receive royalties from secondary sales of their Collectible Avatars on open marketplaces.”

The new collection will be available where Reddit users normally build their avatars on the website. As soon as the purchase of a Collectible Avatar has been completed, it can be used as an avatar on Reddit. 

Owners of the Collectible Avatars will be eligible to receive unique benefits and Collectible Avatar creators will receive a percentage of future secondary sales.
