Public Transport in Argentina Now Payable by Bitcoin

Argentina’s public transport smart card, known as SUBE, now lets you top it up with Bitcoin in 37 localities across the country.

SUBE’s Bitcoin ability is made possible through a collaboration between SUBE’s top-up provider Alto Viaje and fintech company Bitex. Previously only accepting payments by PayPal, Alto Viaje’s aim was to enhance SUBE’s top-up process to be as accessible as possible. Alto Viaje will soon also be adding on payment processing through local provider RapiPago.

Alto Viaje Director Luciano Verardo said, “…we want to offer safe and innovative services, the alliance with Bitex allows us to integrate payment with bitcoins and new possibilities of financial inclusion…”

The tie-up not only allows Alto Viaje to offer an additional mode of top-ups with a secure and tested infrastructure, but also marks a significant milestone for the commonplace adoption of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology in real world use cases.

Bitex CMO Manuel Beaudroit explains, “We believe that this type of project is of great importance since it brings technology as disruptive as bitcoin to the common people, demonstrating the true value and the applications it has in everyday life.”

SUBE card users can top it up their cards at all subte stations, national lottery outlets, and at selected kiosks with automated terminals. A map of SUBE vendors has also been provided on its website to assist users.

The Bitcoin movement in Argentina is perceived to be driven by its financial crisis and resulting inflation as many Argentinians turn to Bitcoin as a means to preserve their wealth. The number of Bitcoin ATMs in the country has also been growing over the past few months.
