Ravi Shankar Prasad – the Telecoms and IT Minister of India – has reportedly assigned the National Informatics Centre (NIC) the duty of establishing a blockchain-powered tool to enhance government schools.

Specifically, on January 20, the minister has tasked the department with the job at the inauguration, of a blockchain tech center of excellence, based in Bengaluru, and designed by NIC.

The NIC and officials in the region are advised to welcome startups operating under defined norms, Prasad claimed.

“I am very keen how we can leverage blockchain in primary education. In fact today I am going to give you a task, NIC team. Can you think of a good application of blockchain technology for improving the quality of government schools all over the country?”

The quality of both public and private institutions are acceptable, he confirmed. However, the minister believed that a blockchain-based solution will do wonder in making transformational amendments to the current system.

Approximately 26,000 startups are operational in India, 9000 of that figure are tech-focused. Prasad requested NIC to come up with mechanisms, which can help include such startups in the tech space, driving towards the goal of “NIC can become a big patron of the startup movement.”
