Greenidge Eyeing South Carolina to Set Up Crypto Mining Operations

By Shannon Wilson | July 4, 2021

Bitcoin mining entity Greenidge Generation reportedly disclosed details of its new operations based in South Carolina to be officially functional as early as 2021.

Specifically, Greenidge reportedly revealed that it would be up and running in a carbon neutral crypto mining center in the city of Spartanburg.

The firm reportedly shared that it has put the ink in a letter of intent, regarding a lease lasting for a decade with printing company LSC Communications’ location on the outskirts of the South Carolina city – which is expected to host its crypto mining “in late 2021 or early 2022.”

Per Greenidge, the location reportedly has the ability to generate  80 megawatts (MW) of power, with two-third of the amount generated from zero carbon sources including nuclear energy.

Jeff Kirt – Head of Greenidge – reportedly revealed that the development is a stride closer to the firm’s goal of establishing “environmentally sound Bitcoin mining” in America.

The company is reportedly running a power plant in New York, with a goal down its pipeline to widen the scope to 85 MW by 2022. However, regardless of Greenidge’s announcement of taking the pioneering role in seemingly green “power generation and cryptocurrency operations”, numerous critics, nominally environmental group Seneca Lake Guardian, believed that Greenidge is only shifting gears to natural gas generated from fracking, instead of coal, to run its operations.

While Greenidge is eyeing the South Carolina region for mining, several firms, which are steering clear from China because of the scrutiny in regulations – are reportedly exploring Texas as a suitable location to set up shop. Nominally, Crypto mining entity Blockware disclosed its presence in Kentucky – a state with one of the cheapest industrial energy costs across the nation.
