Earth Day analysts states Bitcoin mining is moving naturally towards green energy

By Shannon Wilson | April 25, 2022

Earth Day is April 22nd, and with environmental sustainability a hot subject in the worldwide discussion over Bitcoin (BTC) mining, analysts believe the sector is naturally gravitating toward cleaner, cheaper energy sources.

In particular, the worldwide Bitcoin mining business used an anticipated 58.5 percent renewable energy by Q4 2021, according to a January analysis by the Bitcoin Mining Council.

A mix of environmental consciousness, political pressures, and a focus on the bottom line have led to a preference for clean energy. It’s causing a tidal change that might have ramifications well beyond Bitcoin mining, including on global power grid systems.

Thanks to Norway’s access to hydropower and other renewables, bitcoin miners in the country are cleaner than virtually everywhere else on the globe. In reality, renewable energy accounts for 100 percent of Norway’s electrical generation.

Miners reportedly use that renewable energy to create around 1% of the overall Bitcoin hash rate.

Mas Nakachi is the managing director of the XBTO Group’s Bitcoin mining enterprise XBTO, which is situated in Miami. XBTO’s mining business, which began in 2015, generates upwards of $25 million per year and claims to be entirely powered by renewable energy sources.

“Hydropower is one of the most reliable renewable energy sources available to us,” he says.

According to Nakachi, rivers may flow all day, every day, and water can be piped uphill during off-peak hours to store extra energy and drive generators when needed.

He stated that: “Harnessing hydroelectric power has remained an effective mechanism to maintain the most efficient mining possible.” In contrast, according to research published in the Energy Research & Social Science journal, “cryptocurrency is unsustainable by design.”

Another solution being considered in Texas is the use of flexible data centers, which can switch from the public grid to generating clean energy from specialized energy generators to reduce grid stress during peak retail demand periods.

IT entrepreneur and self-proclaimed environmentalist Daniel Batten discussed a multi-pronged approach in which the Bitcoin mining sector is creating a good impact. Bitcoin mining, according to Batten, encourages the construction of renewable energy facilities and aids in the decarbonization of electricity systems.

Bitcoin mining, according to Batten, pushes up electricity consumption demand and, as a result, investments in renewable energy facilities.
