Sony Music Submitted Trademark Application For NFT-authenticated Music

By Natalie Wu | September 9, 2022

US-based music heavyweight Sony Music Entertainment has reportedly disclosed plans to take advantage of NFTs via a submitted trademark application covering music and artists under the Columbia Records logo.

Specifically, as revealed via an Aug. 30 trademark application to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) disclosed by trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis, the application will include “audio and video recordings featuring live musical performances authenticated by NFTs.”

The scope of the application also include marketing services, promotion, distribution, marketing, advertising and online entertainment, including podcasts and audiovisual recordings.

The freshly submitted trademark application reportedly surfaces in the wake of numerous different Sony Music-supported NFT initiatives.

In August, MakersPlace, an NFT market focusing on digital art, reportedly reeled in $30 million via Series A fundraising from a variety of notable firms, including Pantera Capital, Bessemer Venture Partners, Coinbase Ventures and Sony Music Entertainment.

Insights in March reportedly revealed the music firm teaming up with Solana-powered NFT marketplace Snowcrash and fellow music giant Universal Music Group, to introduce Bob Dylan and Miles Davis NFT collections at some point in 2022, with plans for more in the future.

NFTs and the Metaverse are experiencing a gradual growth into more prominent concepts in the music and entertainment sphere.

MTV’s Video Music Awards on Aug. 29 heavily featured online and virtual performances, including Eminem and Snoop Dogg performing their new single in a Metaverse created by Yuga Labs, the same company behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club.

MTV’s Video Music Awards also rolled out a new award category not long ago, Best Metaverse Performance, which came with nominations for six different acts in its inaugural year, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Charli XCX, Twenty One Pilots, BTS and Blackpink, who eventually won.
