Earth Day: A deeper look at crypto-related projects that help the world a greener place

By Natalie Wu | April 25, 2022

Earth Day, a 52-year-old tradition observed on April 22 every year, provides an opportunity for people all over the world to reflect on their environmental progress, as well as gather support for the governmental policy, cultural climate awareness, and personal pledges to sustainability.

In particular, the development of blockchain and Web3 has offered the basic architecture for a structural remodeling in public transparency, as well as a technology that has the ability to be harnessed in service of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Accord goals.

Toucan Protocol’s head of growth and partnerships, Sander DiAngelis, reportedly argued for a mix of physical and digital activities, pointing out that “tokenized carbon credits” are allowing the construction of “virtual carbon sinks that create the real-world planet-positive effect.”

Toucan Protocol just received a $500,000 ecosystem grant from Coinbase’s charitable environment program, which donates 1% of its corporate turnover to initiatives aimed at democratizing cryptocurrencies.

Projects like Pachama and Dovu use artificial intelligence and hash graph technology, respectively, to compute, measure, and disclose carbon footprint data in the corporate and Web3 industries, with the goal of improving accountability and transparency.

Pachama has built a variety of restorative ecosystem initiatives, such as the Colombian coastal deforestation-prevention program dubbed Bajo Calima y Baha Málaga, in collaboration with activist groups such as REDD+. Over 1.2 million metric tonnes of carbon have been sequestered from the environment through credit issuance as the program nears the end of its ten-year duration.

Organizations like the Climate Chain Coalition and Crypto Climate Accord have made significant progress in fostering collaboration and executing environmental promises within the crypto sector.

Mitch Liu, the CEO of Theta Network, a blockchain video streaming network, expressed his conviction that the cultural importance attached to the climate change challenge might spur the development of cutting-edge decentralized solutions.

As an example of this innovation, he noted ClimateDAO’s efforts in “pooling its members’ money to acquire shares in huge, polluting firms to make their operations more sustainable from the inside.”

In the distributed ledger technology (DLT) space, Christian Hasker, chief marketing officer of Hedera Hashgraph, spoke about “striving for a clean Web3,” emphasizing the industry’s collective responsibility to ensure that “We not only have the knowledge and solutions to ensure that the next generation of the internet is sustainable — but crucially, we have a responsibility to do so.”

Prior to declaring Hedera’s continuous commitment to developing green applications with the assistance of their twenty-six council members, he emphasized the bad view of proof-of-work consensus procedures, even those that incorporate environmentally-friendly principles.
