Deadmau5 and Portugal The Man Rolled Out Single In NFT Form Aiming For Platinum

By Shannon Wilson | December 6, 2021

Dance music star Deadmau5 and Grammy award-winning indie rock band Portugal The Man have collaboratively rolled out 1 million copies of their new single“This is fine” via the form of NFTs

Specifically, the single was reportedly rolled out on Deadmau5’s (whose real name is Joel Zimmerman) label, dubbed “Mau5trap”, with a primary target of helping the single become the first NFT achieving platinum.

The artists reportedly completed the minting of 1 million units on the Near Protocol blockchain and rolled them out on marketplace Mintbase. Twenty-five percent of the units were put up for buying at Art Basel’s “Miami Beach” art show on December 2nd.

The rest of the singles can be purchased as a mix of single units and bundled units, which come with unique attributes. The purchase prices by the unit are yet to be finalized.

The announcement promised, “multiple metaverse integrations and rewards coming for collectors of this NFT” but revealed no further specifics.

Per The Recording Industry Association of America, a single needs to hit the 1 million units benchmark in sales in order to achieve platinum. Every NFT can reportedly be purchased for the price of 0.25 NEAR every piece – approximately $2.20 – the same price as an iTunes download in the pre-stream years.

Deadmau5 has reportedly already had prior experience dealing with NFT – one of the most emerging aspects of the crypto sphere. In December last year, Zimmerman formed an alliance with augmented reality artist Sutu to develop NFT “In Titan’s Light”, a 30-second audio-reactive artwork loop paired with a section of the Deadmau5 track “Satrn.”

One month later in 2021, he reportedly joined hands with digital artist Mad Dog Jones to introduce two NFT art collections on the Winklevoss-owned Nifty Gateway.
