The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Calgary, Canada is granting blockchain-based diplomas to more than 4,800 graduating students this year.

The virtual diplomas were developed by ODEM, the premier blockchain-based education marketplace. SAIT’s Class of 2019 will receive the blockchain-based documents along with their traditional parchments, according to ODEM’s press release.

“We believe that students should have control over their own records, and blockchain technology makes that possible,” said ODEM Chief Executive Officer Richard Maaghul.

With the help of blockchain technology, graduates are able to transfer their official documents with recruiters and potential employers around the globe without requesting SAIT to send their paper or electronic records.

“By working together, we’ve only just begun to explore how blockchain technology can make education more accessible, affordable, transferable, and verifiable.”

As an employer, the hiring process is made easier too, as they can easily verify the credentials of SAIT alumni as genuine.

Earlier this month, Singaporean graduates from 18 local schools have received blockchain-based digital certificates starting this year, reported by The Crypto Sight. All these digital records from participating schools can be verified directly on OperCerts.io. This will speed up the verification process greatly and reduce costs associated with traditional paper certificates.

In January, the University of Bahrain has reportedly begun a pilot to issue digital diplomas built on the blockchain for its postgraduate programs. All digital records were registered cryptographically on a blockchain, making them secure, tamper-proof, and easily verifiably anytime, anywhere.
