Holland-based the Port of Rotterdam, along with global shipping heavyweights, has reportedly rolled out a blockchain pilot to make the container management process safer and more efficient.
Specifically, the blockchain project – dubbed Secure Container Release – was reportedly designed with a goal to function in place of the existing PIN code with a digital signal.
Per the port, the existing in-use PIN code system reportedly has to be processed in a manual manner, making it more prone to error and delays. The new digital tool will reportedly make it less susceptible to fraud, along with amping up the efficiency and safety of the container handling process.
Shipping heavyweights, nominally CMA-CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, MSC, ONE-Line, Hutchison Ports ECT Rotterdam, Rotterdam Fruit Wharf, Milestone Fresh, VTO, and Portmade will reportedly collaborate with the application designing firm T-Mining in a pilot project that would last for 3 months.
“During this project, the different participants will be using a blockchain application that enables them to safely and efficiently organize the release procedure followed by the various parties in the chain.”
Throughout the pilot phase, the pick-up rights for the import of containers will reportedly be displayed as a blockchain-powered token instead of a PIN code, the Port claimed.
