After mistakenly sending an apology email to a detective, a crypto thief who stole $15,000 worth of digital currency has been arrested by the Connecticut police.

Specifically, the 29-year-old New Jersey man Darren Carter has swiped a Connecticut resident’s cellphone at an airport in California to steal $15,472 worth of crypto from their Coinbase account. After committing the crime, Carter converted cryptocurrencies to U.S. dollars and moved into a PayPal account hours after the phone was stolen.

Later, he tried to to apologize by drafting an email to send to the victim. However, he mistakenly sent the letter to a detective who is investigating the case. 

The theft Darren Carter, of the Blackwood section of Gloucester Township, was charged with identity theft, police in Westport, Connecticut said in a statement Friday. The police then transferred the stolen funds from PayPal back to the victim.

Recently, Europol has brought into custody 6 suspects for a multi-million cryptocurrency theft, after a jointly conducted operation with the United Kingdom’s South West Regional Cyber Crime Unit, the Dutch police, Eurojust, and the U.K.’s National Crime Agency.

Earlier, Turkey police has reportedly arrested 24 suspects in a nationwide sting operation over a hack which led to 13 million Turkish lira ($2.47 million) worth in Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Ripple (XRP) being stolen.
