Protesters Moved to BTC-powered Fundraising Platform Following GoFundMe Axing

By | February 8, 2022

Truckers protesting the compulsory COVID-19 vaccine in Canada have reportedly migrated from GoFundMe to Bitcoin-powered crowdfunding platform Tallycoin, due to increasing political heat.

Specifically, GoFundMe reportedly shut down the “Freedom Convoy Campaign” and $9 million in donations on February 4th as an outcome of reported violence, which it claimed violated its terms of service.

Previously, donors were reportedly required to submit a refunding application to retrieve their funds. However, after a barrage of criticism, the platform pulled a reverse on the decision, updating that it would refund in an automatic manner.

Not long after GoFundMe shut down the campaign, a group of the organizers reportedly migrated their operations to Tallycoin, a crowdfunding platform developed upon the Bitcoin (BTC) blockchain.

“Legacy financial infrastructure can sometimes be politicized and clamped down upon, whereas Bitcoin is a truly censorship resistant method of communicating value” The new fundraising page further revealed.

As it currently stands at the time of writing, the total donated amount of funds to Tallycoin reportedly hit the $321,111 benchmark – taking up only a small sum of the $9 million raised on GoFundMe.

It is reportedly still indecisive regarding the final outcome of whether the funds raised on Tallycoin will have to face a similar kind of governmental and political pressure when converted into fiat currency.

Previously, the Freedom Convoy Campaign was organized in mid-Jan as a fundraiser on GoFundMe for cross-border truckers in Canada protesting vaccine requirements.

However, the effort has then developed into an all-encompassing rallying point against prescriptive public health measures, including lockdowns and mask requirements.
