Norway-based salmon producing firm Kvarøy Arctic has reportedly become the next member of the IBM Food Trust, for a more transparent operation and help avoid fraud throughout the seafood sector.

Specifically, Kvarøy Arctic – a supplying firm for a wide range of Canada and US-based restaurants and Whole Foods retailers – has reportedly onboarded the IBM-developed blockchain-powered supply chain solution for the food sector.

The new initiative will reportedly enable Kvarøy Arctic to employ blockchain for providing specific data, on the origin of its produce for restaurants and customers.

Raj Rao, IBM Food Trust’s general manager – reportedly shared his idea of the new development, claiming it as a move for “promoting transparency and sustainability in the seafood supply chains”.

Data of the origin of salmon farmed by Kvarøy Arctic will reportedly be available for corporate buyers and consumers via QR codes.

Buyers will reportedly be able to view data and images displaying the salmon producing condition, including the population and the habitats’ density, where the salmons have grown up, their age, ate of harvest, along with data related to the farm-to-market supply route.

Kvarøy Arctic has reportedly experienced a surge in demand for fresh seafood across the US throughout the past three months, with the number of shipments increased two-fold compared to the expected volume.

Espen Braathe – IBM Food Trust representative – reportedly revealed that premium foods have a higher number of fraud cases compared to other consumable goods.
