Fortaleza – the capital of the northeastern Brazilian state of Ceará – will be allowing its citizen to purchase bus tickets via Bitcoin (BTC).

According to Cointelegraph Brazil on July 25, a public transportation firm of the city has publicly introduced the initiative, adding credit card, debit card and Bitcoin, together with other digital coins, to the current payment system.

The project specifically looks to lower the cost for operating the bus ticketing system, per the report.

The firm – dubbed Cooperative of Independent Transport of Passengers of the State of Ceará (Cootraps) – revealed that Bitcoin will be available for payment via a scannable QR code on mobile devices, according to Brazilian news outlet O Povo.

Although Cootraps has mentioned numerous other digital currencies would be available to use, apart from Bitcoin, specific information has yet to be confirmed by the cooperative. Currently, Cootraps web page is inaccessible.

However – Carlos Robério Sampaio – Cootraps CFO – shared that the new system would be a solution to lower bureaucracy level, as well as increase the customers number, since the cooperative aimed for a simplified payment processing procedure, with the employment of electronic vouchers. Additionally, with a digitalised system for purchasing tickets, bus drivers will have no disturbance while driving.
