The ALS Association (ALSA), which created the famous ice bucket challenge that went viral on social media in 2014, has announced (Feb 11) its latest charity campaign called #VoiceYourLove to continue promoting awareness about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
#VoiceYourLove coincides with Valentine’s Day round the corner, and focuses on ALS’ debilitating impact from causing the loss of speech ability. Also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Over time, ALS sufferers lose the ability to move, to speak, and eventually, to breathe.
Apart from partnering celebrities such as Courteney Cox and Renee Zellweger, ALSA said it has also received support from major players in the blockchain community. TRON CEO Justin Sun has pledged $250,000 to the campaign, with Binance Charity Foundation (BCF) pledging $150,000. TRON and BCF, together with BitTorrent, are also major campaign sponsors.
TRON is additionally involved in allowing donors the extra option of making contributions using its TRX token. The campaign also includes blockchain technology powered by TRON to transparently track donation distributions. At the end of the campaign, it plans to release that information to the public.
Distributed ledger technology (DLT) is increasingly being applied in the charity sector. For example, China’s non-profit platform Zhiyuan Hui partnered blockchain platform everiToken last month to create blockchain-based support for volunteers to track their service contributions.
