UK-based telecom heavyweight Vodafone reportedly has plans down its pipeline to auction the first-of-its-kind Short Message Service (SMS) in the form of a nonfungible token (NFT).
Specifically, the SMS, containing the content “Merry Christmas”, was reportedly sent 29 years ago via the Vodafone network on Dec 3, 1992, and was received by Richard Jarvis, a member of the staff at the time.
The historic 15 character-long SMS will reportedly be listed for auctioning as an NFT via a one-off sale, carried out by the Aguttes Auction House in France, as revealed by Romanian news outlet Ziarul Financiar.
By auctioning off the world’s first SMS in the form of NFT, Vodafone reportedly aims to channel the profit generated towards the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (the UN Refugee Agency) for assisting the forcibly displaced individuals.
Vodafone’s SMS NFT sale will reportedly occur on December 21st through an online auction, with people joining in having the ability to place bids using Ethereum (ETH). The one with the highest bid will have possession over exclusive ownership of the communication protocol, which was utilized for transmitting the world’s first SMS.
Vodafone reportedly had to put in the work for nearly a decade (9 years) to have the sufficient ability to transmit and receive SMS. The initiative of minting the world’s first SMS is a different instance of NFT’s power to tokenize and preserve history in a digital manner.
The NFT ecosystem has reportedly been serving as one of the major driving forces for the mainstream adoption of crypto, with corporations coming across their use cases within their current business models.
The Adidas Originals NFT sale will be hosted on the company’s official website on Dec. 17 at a price of 0.2 ETH, equivalent to around $810 at the time of writing.
