Wikimedia Foundation and BitPay, a blockchain payments provider, have entered into a partnership to accept Bitcoin (BTC) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) donations.
Wikimedia Foundation is a non-profit and charitable organization operating Wikipedia and Wikimedia free knowledge projects. According to a BitPay’s press release, Wikimedia Foundation had been accepting BTC donations for several years before switching to Bitpay in order to accept BCH along with Bitcoin.
Pats Pena, Director of Payments and Operations, Wikimedia Foundation said that accepting BCH was a natural next step as there was an increasing interest in difference cryptocurrencies.
“We accept donations globally, and we strive to provide a large variety of donation options. It’s very important that we can get international donations processed in ways that are efficient and cost-effective,” added Pena.
Sonny Singh, Bitpay’s Chief Commercial Officer said that BTC and BCH were one of the “cheapest payment options available so more money goes to charity rather than paying fees”.
Bitpay claimed to process several multi-million dollar donations to non-profits. The company also expected that to continue this year.
