The Republican Party Officially Endorses Cryptocurrency

By Vy Tran | July 9, 2024

The Republican National Committee recently expressed support for several pro-cryptocurrency policies aimed at facilitating digital asset companies and investors. These policies have been included in the party’s official platform for the 2024 U.S. elections, marking their latest effort to reach out to voters interested in cryptocurrency.

The “Make America Great Again” platform of the Republican Party pledges to end the “illegal and treasonous” crackdown on the U.S. cryptocurrency industry, according to official GOP documents released by the campaign of the expected Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump.

The platform also includes promises to “protect the right to mine Bitcoin” and allow cryptocurrency investors to self-custody their tokens, as well as opposing the creation of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs).

The document states:

“We will protect the right… to transact without government oversight and control.”

The inclusion of numerous key cryptocurrency issues in the Republican platform follows a series of moves by presidential candidate Donald Trump to court pro-cryptocurrency voters.

In May, Trump pledged to free Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht if elected and expressed support for self-custody of digital assets at a political conference in Washington D.C., speaking to an enthusiastic crowd of Libertarians, including many pro-cryptocurrency voters. A few weeks later, Trump reportedly met with several Bitcoin miners to discuss cryptocurrency mining policy at his famous Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
