The New York Times Employs Hyperledger Fabric in Minimizing Misinformation

The renowned newspaper The New York Times (NYT) will be employing the Hyperledger Fabric – a Linux-developed blockchain framework – in ensuring the origin of its news is legitimate.

As reported by the new website set up for NYT’s News Provenance Project, the newspaper will be utilizing blockchain tech to minimize the false information in the industry. The project specifically looks to establish a platform, which can be vastly used by publications of different scales.

Blockchain project will reportedly serve as a tool to record “metadata about media” – including clips, pictures and audio recordings – which are put out by new establishments.

The New Provenance Project is at the moment in phase one, with its primary goal is to form a proof-of-concept (POC), dedicated to photojournalism, to showcase the way a blockchain-powered framework can work to scale.

“Our initial work involves exploring a blockchain-based system for recording and sharing metadata about media — images and videos in particular — published by news organizations. We are also conducting user experience research to identify the types of signals that can aid users in recognizing authentic media.” The NYT claimed.

“All hype aside, blockchain offers mechanisms for sharing information between entities in ways we think are essential for establishing and maintaining provenance of digital files.” The NYT further remarked.

As for the web page of the project, every result will be displayed for the general audience to see.

As reported by The Crypto Sight, in March 2019, the New York Times (NYT) has started hiring blockchain talent to develop a proof-of-concept (POC) for new publishers, according to the NYT job posting list on Glassdoor site.
