Swiss Regulators Yet to Receive Connection Efforts from Facebook for Libra Registration

Facebook – the US-based social media heavyweight – has reportedly not made any connections with the lawmakers in Switzerland, concerning its upcoming crypto project Libra.

According to CNBC, Hugo Wyler – a representative in charge of communication at the Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) – claimed that there has been no official connections established by the Libra promoters.

David Marcus – a Facebook executive and one of Libra’s main men – revealed in his testimony that FDPIC is going to be the regulator responsible for privacy protection of the Libra Association.

“For the purposes of data and privacy protections, the Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner will be the Libra Association’s privacy regulator.”

Wyler claimed to have acknowledged the decision from Facebook, in choosing it as a data protection supervisory authority for Libra, but until today, they have not been contacted by the promoters of Libra,”

“We expect Facebook or its promoters to provide us with concrete information when the time comes. Only then will we be able to examine the extent to which our legal advisory and supervisory competence is given. In any case, we are following the development of the project in the public debate.”

During the Libra hearing with the US House of Representatives Financial Services Committee, Rep. Patrick McHenry questioned Marcus on Facebook’s intention in registering Libra with Switzerland. He then answered that the country is an “international place” that is good for running a business.

“The choice of Switzerland — nothing to do with evading regulations or oversight”. Marcus assured further concerns as to why Libra go abroad.
