Singaporean graduates from 18 local schools will receive blockchain-based digital certificates starting this year.

According to Channel News Asia, the initiative is part of a national-level project dubbed OpenCerts, which was jointly developed by SkillsFuture Singapore, Government Technology Agency, the Ministry of Education and Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

OpenCerts is a blockchain-based platform to issue and validate educational credentials that are tamper-proof. All these digital records from participating schools can be verified directly on OperCerts.io. This will speed up the verification process greatly and reduce costs associated with traditional paper certificates.

“With OpenCerts, we are harnessing the power of blockchain in a practical way,” Ong said. “It allows for any educational institute to issue OpenCerts, and for anyone to quickly check the validity of a digital certificate.”

Earlier this year, the university of Bahrain has piloted a blockchain-powered program to issue digital diplomas, which is in a collaboration with Learning Machine, reported The Crypto Sight on January 14.
