In order to ward off the prevalence of fake news, major global telecommunications company Orange has developed a system using blockchain in online news authentication.
According to a press release, a platform called Safe.press will help verify authentic news by displaying its green logo on such websites and news articles. Created by French tech startup Block Expert, the initiative is a consortium-based certification system leveraging blockchain immutability to facilitate real-time news verification.
The platform reportedly does not only enhance the credibility of media outlets towards readers but also support the intellectual property rights of writers and reporters. With Safe.press, the audience is able to trace back the source of online content on multiple media and check its genuinity within one click.
Speaking of this initiative, Béatrice Mandine, Communications and Brand Executive Director at Orange, said:
“I am very proud that Orange is taking this initiative to contribute to the fight against fake news that has become a major affliction of our time. Orange’s communication will now benefit from Block Expert’s blockchain solution that fits perfectly alongside our key watchwords: trust, security, and innovation.”
Recently, Orange is reportedly showing its growing interest in blockchain technology. In Hello Show event December last year, the firm revealed itself being involved in developing a voting solution employing blockchain. Accordingly, the solution would base on Ethereum blockchain and aim to conduct extreme-level secured opinion polls among governments or companies. Previously, the U.S. state of West Virginia has tested and introduced the similar blockchain-based voting system for its midterm election.
