Nigeria to Train 1,000 Youths Annually in AI and Blockchain

By Vy Tran | July 26, 2024

The Nigerian government has initiated an annual program to train 1,000 citizens in artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain technology, aiming to position Nigeria at the forefront of global economies and foster innovation.

Launch of the Training Program

On July 23, Vice President Kashim Shettima inaugurated the AI Expertise Blockchain and Technology Training and Outsourcing Initiative in Jigawa. This program is a key component of Nigeria’s strategy for digital transformation and leadership in Africa. Shettima emphasized:

“We are not merely catching up with the rest of the world; we are poised to overtake them. This initiative offers its beneficiaries the chance to become part of a global workforce, driving innovation that will shape our future.”

Government and Tech Company Partnership

The Nigerian government has partnered with tech company Gluwa to implement the training program. This collaboration aims to equip 1,000 Nigerians annually with skills in AI, blockchain, and other advanced technologies.

Financial Support for Enterprises

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced a financial grant of 150,000 Nigerian nairas (approximately $90) for micro, small, and medium enterprises. This grant is intended to further incentivize the development of a home-grown fintech ecosystem.

The initiative to train 1,000 Nigerians each year is part of Nigeria’s broader efforts to accelerate development. Shettima elaborated:

“We are adopting this initiative across the nation to create a network of tech hubs that will power Nigeria’s economic growth for decades to come.”

Establishing Research Centers

Earlier in July, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) announced plans to establish research centers focused on emerging technologies like AI, the Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, highlighted the agency’s dedicatio to building a robust technology research ecosystem. The planned research centers will target critical areas, including IoT, blockchain technology, unmanned aerial vehicles, additive manufacturing, AI, and robotics. Inuwa stated:

“We are establishing a special-purpose vehicle that will look into these key areas and also establish research centers across the six geo-political zones of Nigeria that will be targeting these six key areas of emerging technologies.”

This comprehensive approach underscores Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging advanced technologies for economic growth and global competitiveness.
