New Upgraded Shellbot Malware is Released

On May 1, the cryptojacking malware Shellbot, first discovered in 2005, has reportedly been upgraded with new functions, according to Threat Stack.

The first Shellbot was created with the ability to infect on Linux servers in order to break the SSH credentials access with weak passwords individually and then using the resources to mine privacy-focused monero (XMR). However, in this new improved version, the whole shared network can be infected then the malware will install itself there to mine monero.

The Boston-based cybersecurity firm Threat Stack found out the new Shellbot with 3 parts on a U.S. Company Linux server. Those include the malware installed 272-line script, and an IRC chat server allowing hacker to track and control remotely,

The income of this malware can be about $300 a day and increasing day by day. The Threat Stack chief officer, Sam Bisbee warned the potential abilities of this virus: “They are fully capable of using this malware to exfiltrate, ransom, or destroy data.”

Last week, the MalwareBytes company denied the existance of the illegal crypto mining against consumers but in a few days later, the U.S software security company Symantec unveiled the new malware which targeting corporate networks.
