The Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) and blockchain firm BloomBloc have reportedly teamed up to release a blockchain-based solution, to offer palm oil traceability feature across the supply chain.

Specifically, the blockchain solution, after a successful initial testing process, is now put up for pilot phase, targeting oil palm growers, palm oil processors, plantations and family owned smallholders throughout the nation.

The solution will provide safekeeping for every tree and its related data, enabling tracking features for clients, regarding the journey from plantation, to mill, and on to the final product.

The new tool is designed after the mandatory Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification standard has been implemented on a national scale.

“It speaks volumes about our trust in our supply chain. And it is yet another way Malaysia is showing the world that we value our people and our planet. We hope that by creating this platform and demonstrating the benefits of using blockchain technology, we will encourage others who are practising sustainable agriculture to follow our lead.” Datuk Dr Kalyana Sundram, head of MPOC, reportedly claimed.

The tool is expected to help solve Sustainability issues the Malaysian oil palm sector are facing, mainly because of illegal logging and the replacement of forests with plantations.

Malaysia has utilized the features blockchain has to offer as viable solutions to deal with problems in the food and agricultural products supply chain before. In 2019, the Malaysian state of Penang revealed intentions to build a blockchain tool for product origin tracing.
