The smart courts in China are reportedly turning to blockchain and A.I as viable solutions to help them make the final rulings on millions of legal lawsuits. 

Reported by the Xinhua news agency of China on December 5, the smart internet courts in China, which employed blockchain and A.I as the primary operating source, has successfully made the final ruling on over 3.1 million legal cases across China, within a period of 7 months (Mar-Oct) of 2019. 

These blockchain-based “courts of the future” help establish a communication line between citizens and virtual judges, managed by A.I, in front of numerous screens, which would save them the trouble of attending the court in person. The system also comes with features that support receiving court rulings via sms texts or other primary messaging solutions. 

Following the introduction of the first smart internet court throughout the globe located in the eastern city of Hangzhou 2 years ago, China has rolled out the systems of the same type in 2 more major Chinese suburban cities – Beijing and Guangzhou. 

Zhang Wen – current chief of Beijing Internet Court – reportedly shared that the blockchain and A.I are the techs entrusted to help the systems come up with accurate judgement. 

“In the current use of AI as an assistant to make rulings, efficiency is prioritized over accuracy. A human judge is ultimately responsible for the fair ruling. […] But we are heading toward a future when we can see an AI judge sitting at the podium.” Zhang further remarked. 

Per the Supreme People’s Court, over 1 million Chinese people have decided to try out the smart court system, together with 73,200 lawyers.
