Bitcoin Miners Caused $25M Electricity-related Financial Damage, Claimed Malay Electricity Firm

Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) – a Malaysia-based electricity provider – is reportedly planning to employ stricter methods, in an attempt to reduce millions of financial damage, caused by Bitcoin (BTC) miners.

Reported on August 15 by EdgeProp, by utilizing customized electricity distribution boards, Bitcoin mining operations in the region have caused a total NB RM106 million ($25.3 million) worth of financial damage, up until June this year.

Specifically, a number of 437 electricity thefts related to Bitcoin mining have been reported in Peninsular Malaysia within the time frame, with 370 of which happened in the state of Selangor.

TNB is the only electricity provider in the Peninsular Malaysia region, and reportedly the biggest power firm throughout the SEA area, with RM99.03 billion ($23.6 billion) in assets.

Siti Sarah Johana Mohd Said – TNB distributing network general manager – the company will be involving the authority in the process against account holders.

“A letter of demand will be issued to the owner of the premises account after we disconnected the electricity supply.” The manager added.

Under Section 37 of Malaysia’s Electricity Supply Act, power theft-related crimes can be punished with up to 3 years of jail time, along with a maximum fine of RM100,000 ($24,000).

The company is legally allowed to refuse providing electricity of up to 3 months, and can submit payment requests for due amounts dating back to 5 years.
