Europol has brought into custody 6 suspects for a multi-million cryptocurrency theft, after a jointly conducted operation with the United Kingdom’s South West Regional Cyber Crime Unit, the Dutch police, Eurojust, and the U.K.’s National Crime Agency (NCA).

Reported in a press release published on June 25th, the above-mentioned people were responsible for typosquatting – an act of fraud which relies on the “typo errors” made by Internet users, during the process of writing website address into a web browser, to steal credentials and move to a previously set up scam web page.

Regarding this specific case, the Europol revealed that the criminals were successful in applying the typosquatting method, hijacking log-in details and thus acquired access to customers’ wallets and the stored funds. According to Europol report, with this scheme, the attackers have caused at least 4,000 bitcoin (BTC) of financial damage to clients, locating in 12 different nations.

The 6 hijackers are reportedly UK-based and Netherlands-based. Europol has then given their specific coordinates to the British and Dutch police, who has reportedly shared the details and evidence at their headquarters prior to the bust. 

As previously reported by TheCryptoSight, malware watchdogs has discovered a fraudulent web page, impersonating Cryptohopper crypto trading site to steal crypto login credentials. The fraudulent page imitated Cryptohopper logo, in an attempt to attract victims into downloading a setup.exe installing tool to their computing system, which then releases a group of information-stealing, crypto-mining, and clipboard-hijacking trojans.
