An indictment has been filed in a court in Israel against Afek Zard for alleging stealing 74,990.74 Dash from his friend, Alexei Yaromenko, who had been teaching him how to invest in cryptocurrency. At the time of the theft, each Dash was worth $82.50, making the theft worth almost $6.2 million.

According to local media outlet News1 (Apr 18), Zard accessed Yaromenko’s computer in the latter’s apartment when he was not at home, obtaining Yaromenko’s crypto wallet address and password details. Zard then created four digital wallet addresses of his own in a way that attempted to make them untraceable back to him. He proceeded to empty out Yaromenko’s wallet and passed the Dash around between several wallets to try and hide his tracks. News1 said Zard may not have acted alone.

For the crime, Zard is being charged with theft in aggravated circumstance, money laundering, and illegal access to a computer to commit an offense.

Cryptocurrency related thefts in large sums are not completely uncommon. Earlier this month, The Crypto Sight reported that a 21-year-old student from Boston was handed 10 years in prison for stealing more than $7.5 million in cryptocurrency by hacking victims’ cellphones. Two Romanian nationals were also convicted in the US of causing over 400,000 personal computers to be infected with malware since 2007, allowing the duo to siphon millions off their victims.
