South Korean Telecom Giant KT Introduces Blockchain 5G Service

On April 16th, South Korea’s largest telecom company KT Corporation has officially introduced blockchain technology fifth-generation cellular networks (5G).

According to The Korea Times reports, the 5G under the name “GiGa Chain” with the aim of ensuring the security of Internet-of-Things (IoT) as well as preventing cyber attacks.

By applying blockchain tech to the GiGA Stealth technology, the firm now provides an “invisible” IP address that can not be tracked by virtual attackers.

In the press conference, Lee Dong-myeon, president of future platform business group at KT Corporation, said that IoT devices are more likely to be exposed to cyber attacks. He then showed that by using blockchain that integrated with 5G, the firm can enhance assurance cybersecurity measures, thus reducing the risk of hacking in the devices.

Besides personal usage, the GiGa Chain also offers its service for other organizations by presenting the Blockchain as a Service (BaaS) platform. As the given name, the BaaS offers many features including smart contracts to simplify the transaction process without requiring third parties participation. In addition, KT also designed the technology as  digitization of vouchers from local governments for residents.

As announced in the report, the company has implied its blockchain-powered payment system for Gimpo City in Gyeonggi Province since April. It is expected to issue over $9.7 million worth of KT’s cryptocurrency and gain more blockchain adopt from regional governments from this project.
