Denver, the capital and most populous municipality of the United States state of Colorado, has announced to apply a blockchain-based app on smartphones for casting municipal election.
The platform, which is powered by blockchain technology, is a mobile voting app that allows overseas voters, active-duty military and their eligible dependents to vote.
By using the Voatz application, voters will then fill out an absentee ballot request, verify the authentication process and submit their ballot for the upcoming election. The next Denver’s election and voting process are between March 23 and May 7.
This pilot program is a partnership between the City and County of Denver, mobile voting platform Voatz, Tusk Philanthropies, and the National Cybersecurity Center.
The application provides voters with the convenience without having to print and scan the paperwork. Also, voters can now verify their ballot as received and recorded correctly or not due to the accuracy blockchain provides.
Nimit Sawhney, CEO and co-founder of Voatz further commented “The latest developments in smartphone hardware, encryption and blockchain technology make mobile voting a reality. This is a significant stepping stone that I hope many other states and cities will follow.”
In 2018, West Virginia was the first state to offer a secure military mobile voting application in a federal election. The 2018 launch was also in partnership with Tusk Philanthropies.
