Roman Catholic Archdiocese Saying Yes to Crypto-based Donations

| 04-Th8-2022

The Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. of the Roman Catholic Church will reportedly start to accept crypto-based donations, as included in its attempts to grow its ministries.

Specifically, the crypto platform Engiven was reportedly revealed to be the facilitator for the crypto-enabled donations to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., to support fundraising efforts and to amplify the church’s “digital stewardship initiatives.”

As disclosed via the archdiocese’s website, the funds will reportedly be directly dedicated to assisting 139 D.C.-area parishes, along with local programs, including providing food to those in need.

“The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. seeks to leverage technology to engage parishioners in new and exciting ways, making it easier for the faithful to fulfill the mission of the Church,” Joseph Gillmer, executive director of development for the archdiocese, reportedly remarked regarding the development.

Engiven’s page for the archdiocese reportedly comes with the choice to send donations anonymously in different cryptocurrencies, from Bitcoin (BTC) to 0x’s ZRX. As revealed by the platform, funds devoted to individual parishes receive 100% of the net proceeds of donations.

Engiven had reportedly been offering support features for crypto donations throughout over 400 faith-based organizations, including finalizing a single BTC donation for $10 million.

Founder James Lawrence further claimed at the time that “no faith-based organization, church or non-profit can afford to neglect its online audience, donors and seekers” with crypto becoming a part of that ecosystem.

Although numerous dioceses within the Roman Catholic Church appear to have a positive attitude towards utilizing the latest technology, the Russian Orthodox Church shared in February last year that it had no hard plans down the pipeline to add cryptocurrency as a vehicle for donations, nor create its own digital currency.
