NZ Cryptopia Exchange Endures ‘Significant Losses’ From Hack

This week, Cryptopia, a New Zealand-based cryptocurrency exchange, has gone offline after being hacked and suffers from “significant losses” as a result.

On Jan 14, the exchange tweeted that they are undergoing “unscheduled maintenance”. For the next 12 hours, they continued to reassure users that its team is trying to resolve the issue.

A day later, another tweet announced that the exchange “suffered a security breach which resulted in significant losses”. Authorities, including NZ police and High Tech Crime Unit, were notified about the matter. The circumstance is currently being regarded as “major crime” and no update had been issued at the time of writing.

The exchange’s website, including support and blog pages, has been down since the event, with a notice saying: “Cryptopia is currently in unscheduled maintenance mode. We will be back soon.”

No information on the value of the losses, the tokens, and currencies affected or any measures to refund users had been provided. In the meantime, Whale Alert made various tweets indicating that 19,391 ether (ETH) tokens worth nearly $2.44 million and around 48 million centrality (CENNZ) tokens worth about $1.18 million were transferred from Cryptopia to an unknown wallet on Jan 13. It is still unclear whether the transaction was made by Cryptopia or the hacker.
