TON Foundation Rolled Out Ethereum Name Service-like Domain Names

By Warren Hayes | July 7, 2022

The Open Network (TON) Foundation has reportedly been the mot recent crypto firm to complete the integration of Ethereum Name Service (ENS)-like domain names to its ecosystem.

Specifically, The TON Foundation reportedly issued an official announcement regarding the introduction of TON DNS – a new solution enabling users to assign human-readable names to crypto wallets, smart contracts and websites.

The domain zone for TON DNS, bearing similarities to different well-known crypto-associated domain names such as “.eth” or “.crypto” – is “.ton”, and will make it possible for users to tap into decentralized applications in a simplified measure.

With TON DNS, users will reportedly have the ability to utilize simple and short domain names, rather than typing in a long string of letters and numbers.

A domain name created using the TON DNS will not only serve as a nickname but will also unlock a wallet address. The TON Foundation also has plans down its pipeline to complete the integration of its TON DNS technology into TON Sites, as well as TON Proxy tools that have the expected release timeline being the third quarter of this year.

Hence, A .ton domain name will be a welcome alternative to centralized domain registries, which have the ability to block a website’s domain arbitrarily,” the announcement notes.

Together with the TON DNS introduction , the foundation reportedly also disclosed its intention of carrying out an auction of the first “.ton” domain names on July 30. The auction has been “designed to be as decentralized as possible, with equal conditions” for every participant, per the TON Foundation, further claiming that it will operate on smart contracts for a period of seven days.

“Notably, coins from the sale of each domain will be removed from circulation — these tokens will be sent to a smart contract from which they will not be able to be withdrawn”.

The TON DNS introduction was carried out after TON Blockchain’s integration with mobile and wallet Telegram bots were conducted in early 2022.
